Remote Into a VirtualBox Appliance

The "magic sauce" is to remote into a headless appliance that way your remote session will automatically re-size. If you launch the appliance with VirtualBox locally and then remote into you cannot re-size it.

The alternative is to use VBoxHeadless directly, as follows:
C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe --startvm "Image Name"

Trouble Shooting

Make sure to turn off 3D video acceleration, it was causing a window to appear on my Windows 7 host, and it interfered with the remote connection.

Had trouble connected to my VM on my LAN, there were multiple Firewall rules with Windows 7.  Ended up deleting all of the rules for both Virtual Box and Headless, and when things started again, it allowed access.  That fixed the problem.

Turn off Zone Alarm Debug Logging

C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\tvDebug.log

Here's what to do:

1. Press Cntrl and Shift and Rt- click on the ZA icon in sys tray.
2. Choose set debug level.
3. Click on Off radio at debug categories.
4. Delete tvdebug.log. It resides at C:\Your Win folder\Internet logs
5. Restart your PC

Joomla installation, remove feed error message in control panel

It's not a bug, you just need to disable the 'Joomla! Security Newsfeed' module

  • Extensions=>Module Manager=>'Administrator' tab
  • disable 'Joomla! Security Newsfeed' module.

Because this module load feed data with link http://feeds.joomla.org/JoomlaSecurityNews, this link is broken, so it pop up a error loading feed data error.

How to turn off WordPress smart quotes

There are actually a few different ways to do this, including modifying the functions.php file in your theme folder, or modifying the default-filters.php file in your wp-includes folder. But I like creating a separate php file and making it into a WordPress plugin, as described in this post by Katja Stokley. Create a text file called TurnOffSmartQuotes.php and put this in it.

Then just upload this file to your wp-content/plugins folder, login to your WordPress dashboard, select "Plugins," and activate your new plugin. You've just turned off smart quotes on your WordPress blog.

Explorer / “file open” dialog sort order problems

Here's the part that made Windows save this sorting information everywhere. Hold down the Ctrl key and click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the Window to close it. Now whenever you run a Windows application that uses the File Open, Save, or Save As dialog boxes, the files are listed in Date Modified order rather than Alphabetically.
